Bread for the dead ~By Elizabeth Jiménez Montelongo

Bread for the dead

We leave offerings for the dead

What if we also made offerings

For the living

Offerings for those who aren’t remembered

Who are forgotten before death

Who were forgotten as children

Not seen, not spoken to, not loved

Those who tried and failed

Who lost everything

Who gave up because

Everyone gave up on them

Who have nothing because

They were kidnapped into prisons

Laws that were excuses

For prison slavery and

When they leave they won’t find

a home, food, a family

Can’t find a job

It could happen to anybody

We could be forgotten

We could be hungry

Living on the street

Living in a car

Hungry for bread

Bread for the dead

So what if we make offerings

Offerings for the living

Bread for the living

and bread for the dead
