Teaching English to Abuelita cuando tenia cuatro anos

While she's trying her best to teach me how to dot my I's and write my O's

Vamos al supermercado to make mami some food

The cashier laughs because her English is not good

I'm too young, no entender

I don't understand why they are making fun of her

At first no quería aprender

Trying not to give them a reason to judge and stare

Resisting my culture for many years

Embarrassed again, here come the tears

They say "even the gringos understand the preterite"

I know, but I just don't get it

Eventually I gained my senses and came around

Practicing mi Español más, learning how it's supposed to sound

Solo quiero make Abuelita proud

Años y años se pasó

I wish I could go back to when I was four years old.

there's so much trauma here that resonates with me: the "making fun" (how many times do I remember being told "here, we speak english"), the "resisting culture" (cuz colonization will always make us feel inferior - but we are beyond beautiful in our vibrant shades of sabor!!), the "tears." jajom for sharing your art, Nia. I see you. I validate you. I stand in solidarity contigo. (p.s. Jajom is our Indigenous Taino word for gratitude). warmth from Borikén, Lola
